Rep. Dan Wolgamott, D-St. Cloud, has been named an assistant majority leader in the Minnesota House.

Wolgamott won re-election in House District 14B, which covers eastern St. Cloud, with 56% of the vote in November.

His DFL peers elected him to the position in the House.

Wolgamott hasn't felt this honored and excited "since being elected captain of my high school football team," he told a St. Cloud Times reporter on Monday.

The session begins January 5.

Rep. Melissa Hortman, D-Brooklyn Park, was re-elected to the position of House speaker.

It will be Wolgamott's second term.

"Iā€™m proud of the work I've done and the connections I've made during my first term, and to have that culminate in my peers entrusting me with this leadership position means a great deal to me personally," Wolgamott said in a Monday statement. "I will use this leadership role to shine a bright light on the needs of St. Cloud and Central Minnesota, and work tenaciously to bring people together to get things done for the people I represent."

Cold Spring Rep. Lisa Demuth, a Republican in House District 13A, will be an assistant minority leader in the House. It's her second term as well.
